The 5 Habits of Great Teams How to boost your team's health, happiness and impact

What makes great teams ticks? A wealth of new research and practises have emerged in recent yeard, with newfound interest in engagement at work, the evolution of organizations, new practises like agile, open source and human centered. The amount we do collaboratively has shot up <x>% over the past 20 years, and more of our work gets done in teams. So how do we do that better, in ways that increasing the meaning and impact of our own work? Five recurring patterns or meta-practises emerge in various theories on team dynamcis and effectiveness, drawn from agile, psychology, teal organizations and organizational design. Each meta-practise has its own “muscles and mindsets,” with its own collaborative recipes, hacks and dance steps, as outlined in my book.

  5. Feedback — Testing early and often. Listening to the people you serve.

1) Purpose

Getting to why. Finding your team’s passions and purpose. 

Great teams understand WHY they’re doing the work.

At a gut level they feel in their bones and can express in their own words. This unlocks meaning, impact — w When people believe in what they’re doing, they do better. That requires us to undestand both passion (the underlying motivations of each member of the team) and align it with collective purpose (the overall mission or larger connection to the organization or mission as a whole.) The presence of absence of these things is was provides the energy or rocket fuel for the team. When you have clarity of purpose and individual passion, teams excel. They have hard to define yet totally indispensavle “fire in the belly” that drives great work forward. When they don’t, engagement drops, passion flags, and work slows.
